Waterways Oil Spills became a major environmental problem and its costs are considerable in both economic and ecological terms.

Using Remote Sensing Techniques and SAR Images offered the solution for monitoring and detecting oil spills in fresh and coastal waters and lakes.

The SAR can distinguish one kind of target from another, slicks recognition is accomplished by measuring the size and speed of the slick and by observing it with high resolution in one or more dimensions. SAR can operate from long range and through clouds or other atmospheric effects that limit optical and infrared imaging sensors.

Thus, the detection of oil spills can be identified to its source using Optical / Radar sensors to support decision makers in observing and preventing sea pollution.
